About Scopolamine
What is this medication? Scopolamine is a prescription medication primarily used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness or as a result of anesthesia used during surgery. It belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergics and works by blocking certain signals in the central nervous system that trigger the vomiting reflex. The drug is most frequently administered via a small transdermal patch that is placed on the skin behind the ear, allowing the medicine to be absorbed slowly into the bloodstream over a period of up to three days. Beyond its use for travel and postoperative recovery, scopolamine is sometimes utilized to decrease saliva and respiratory secretions or to manage specific gastrointestinal issues. It is important for patients to apply the patch at least four hours before the anticipated need to ensure it has enough time to become effective. Common side effects can include dry mouth, dizziness, and blurred vision, so individuals using this medication should exercise caution when performing tasks that require alertness, such as driving or operating machinery.
