About Silver Nitrate

What is this medication? Silver nitrate is a topical prescription medication primarily used as a cauterizing agent to treat a variety of skin conditions and minor injuries. It is most commonly applied to wounds to help remove damaged or excess tissue, such as overgrown skin that can interfere with the healing process. Healthcare providers also utilize this substance to manage umbilical stumps in newborns or to cauterize certain types of ulcers in the mouth and on the skin. Beyond wound management, silver nitrate serves as an effective tool for removing common warts and skin tags through its ability to destroy target tissue. It also functions as a local hemostatic agent, meaning it can quickly stop minor bleeding from superficial cuts or during small medical procedures. Because it possesses antimicrobial properties, it helps prevent infection in the treated area while promoting the formation of a scab or crust.
