About Simulect
What is this medication? Simulect, which is the brand name for the generic drug basiliximab, is an immunosuppressant medication used to prevent the body from rejecting a kidney transplant. It belongs to a class of drugs called monoclonal antibodies that work by targeting specific proteins in the immune system. Specifically, Simulect binds to and blocks the interleukin-2 receptor on the surface of T-lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that would otherwise identify and attack the new organ as a foreign threat. By inhibiting this immune response, the medication helps ensure the donor kidney can function properly during the critical period immediately following the transplant surgery.
This medication is typically administered as an intravenous injection by a healthcare professional in a hospital setting. It is usually given in a two-dose regimen, with the first dose provided shortly before the transplant surgery and the second dose administered four days after the operation. Simulect is not used as a standalone treatment; instead, it is part of a combination therapy that includes other immunosuppressive drugs like cyclosporine and corticosteroids. It is important to note that this drug is intended for the prevention of acute organ rejection rather than the treatment of a rejection episode that has already begun.
