About Sodium Bicarbonate
What is this medication?
Sodium bicarbonate is an alkalizing agent used to treat conditions where the body has too much acid. It is commonly prescribed for metabolic acidosis, a condition that can arise from kidney failure, severe dehydration, or uncontrolled diabetes. By increasing the pH level of the blood or other body fluids, it helps restore a more neutral chemical balance necessary for normal physiological function.
This medication is also used to manage severe indigestion and heartburn by neutralizing excess gastric acid in the stomach. In clinical settings, it may be administered intravenously during medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest or certain types of poisoning to stabilize the patient. Additionally, it can be used to make the urine more alkaline, which helps the kidneys excrete certain medications or toxins more effectively.
