About SOHONOS

What is this medication?

Sohonos is a prescription medicine containing the active ingredient palovarotene. It is specifically approved to treat adults and children with a rare genetic condition called fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, which is often abbreviated as FOP. This disorder causes muscle and connective tissues like tendons and ligaments to be replaced by bone outside the normal skeleton, a process known as heterotopic ossification. Sohonos is indicated for use in females aged 8 years and older and males aged 10 years and older who have reached a specific level of skeletal maturity.

The medication works as a selective retinoic acid receptor gamma agonist. By targeting these specific receptors, it helps to decrease the formation of new abnormal bone that occurs after flare-ups or due to ongoing disease progression. While it does not cure the underlying condition, it is used to reduce the volume of new heterotopic ossification, which can help preserve mobility and physical function for patients living with FOP. It is typically taken as a daily capsule, with the dosage increased by a healthcare provider during times of active flare-ups.
