About Sorbitol-Mannitol
What is this medication? Sorbitol-Mannitol is a prescription irrigation solution composed of two different sugar alcohols. It is primarily used as a cleansing and visualizing fluid during specific surgical operations, particularly urological procedures such as transurethral resection of the prostate or other bladder surgeries. The solution is not intended for injection and is instead used to wash out the surgical site, helping to clear away blood, tissue fragments, and other debris so the surgeon can maintain a clear view of the area.
This combination works because it is non-conductive, meaning it does not carry an electric current. This property is essential when surgeons use electrosurgical instruments to cut or cauterize tissue, as it prevents the electrical current from dispersing to surrounding areas. Additionally, the solution provides the necessary pressure to distend the bladder or urethral walls, creating space for the surgical tools to operate effectively. Because it is an osmotic solution, it also helps manage fluid balance within the localized area during the procedure.
