About Spherusol
What is this medication?
Spherusol is a prescription skin test antigen used to detect cellular immunity against the Coccidioides fungus, which is the organism responsible for causing Valley Fever. It is specifically designed to identify a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction in individuals who have been previously infected. By injecting a small amount of the antigen just under the skin, healthcare providers can monitor for a physical immune response to determine if the body recognizes and reacts to the fungus.
This medication is primarily indicated for patients with a documented or suspected history of Coccidioidomycosis to assess their immune status. It is not intended for the initial diagnosis of an acute infection or as a general screening tool for the public. Results are typically measured forty-eight hours after administration by checking for the development of a raised, hardened area at the injection site, which indicates a positive immune memory of the fungus.
