About Spravato

What is this medication?

Spravato is the brand name for esketamine, a prescription nasal spray used primarily for adults suffering from treatment-resistant depression. This classification applies to individuals with major depressive disorder who have not responded adequately to at least two different antidepressant treatments. Additionally, it is indicated for the rapid reduction of depressive symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder who are experiencing an acute suicidal crisis or have thoughts of self-harm.

Because of the potential for serious side effects such as sedation, dissociation, and the risk of misuse, Spravato is strictly administered under the supervision of a healthcare provider in a certified medical setting. It is not a standalone treatment but is typically used in conjunction with a daily oral antidepressant. Patients must remain at the treatment center for monitoring for at least two hours after receiving their dose to ensure their safety and well-being.
