About SULFADIAZINE
What is this medication?
Sulfadiazine is a prescription antibiotic that belongs to the class of medications known as sulfonamides, or sulfa drugs. It works by preventing the growth of bacteria by interfering with their ability to produce folic acid, which is essential for bacterial survival and replication. This medication is typically used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those affecting the urinary tract, ears, and the lining of the brain and spinal cord, such as meningitis.
In addition to treating standard bacterial infections, sulfadiazine is frequently prescribed in combination with other drugs to treat toxoplasmosis, a condition caused by a parasite. It is also used as a long-term preventative treatment to reduce the chance of recurring rheumatic fever in individuals who are at high risk. Because it is specifically designed to target bacteria and certain parasites, it will not work for viral infections like the common cold or the flu.
