About Thalomid

What is this medication? Thalomid is a prescription medication primarily used to treat two distinct medical conditions. First, it is indicated for use in combination with a steroid called dexamethasone to treat patients newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma, which is a type of cancer that affects plasma cells in the bone marrow. Second, it is used for the treatment of skin symptoms associated with erythema nodosum leprosum, an inflammatory complication of leprosy, as well as for the long-term maintenance therapy of these symptoms.

The drug works by affecting the body's immune system and interfering with the growth of blood vessels that supply tumors. Because it can cause severe, life-threatening birth defects or fetal death, it is only available through a restricted distribution program. Beyond its immunomodulatory effects, it also has anti-inflammatory properties that help manage the painful skin lesions and inflammation associated with leprosy complications.
