About Tiopronin
What is this medication?
Tiopronin is a prescription drug primarily used to prevent the formation of cystine stones in the kidneys, ureters, and bladder for patients with a condition known as cystinuria. Cystinuria is a rare genetic disorder where the body excretes high amounts of the amino acid cystine into the urine. Because cystine does not dissolve easily in urine, it can crystallize and form stones that cause significant pain, infections, or blockages in the urinary tract.
This medication works by undergoing a chemical process called thiol-disulfide exchange with cystine to create a disulfide complex that is significantly more soluble than cystine alone. By making the substance more soluble, the drug helps keep it dissolved in the urine so it can be passed from the body without forming solid stones. Tiopronin is typically prescribed for patients who have not responded well to increased fluid intake, dietary changes, or other conservative medical treatments.
