About TobraDex
What is this medication?
TobraDex is a combination ophthalmic medication that contains two active ingredients: tobramycin and dexamethasone. Tobramycin belongs to a class of drugs known as aminoglycoside antibiotics, which work by stopping the growth of various types of bacteria. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that helps reduce symptoms of inflammation such as redness, swelling, and itching. By combining these two components, the medication effectively treats eye conditions where both a bacterial infection and inflammation are present.
Doctors typically prescribe this medication for inflammatory ocular conditions where there is a high risk of bacterial infection, such as certain types of conjunctivitis or blepharitis. It is also frequently used following eye surgeries, including cataract removal, to prevent infection and manage post-operative swelling. TobraDex is available as both an eye drop suspension and an ointment, and it must be used exactly as directed by a healthcare professional to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to minimize the risk of side effects like increased eye pressure.
