About Trimethoprim sulfate and Polymyxin B sulfate
What is this medication? Trimethoprim sulfate and polymyxin B sulfate is a prescription ophthalmic solution used to treat superficial bacterial infections of the eye, such as acute conjunctivitis. By combining two different antibiotics, this medication provides broad-spectrum coverage against several types of bacteria that commonly cause eye irritation, discharge, and redness. It is typically administered as drops directly into the affected eye to target the site of infection and reduce clinical symptoms.
The combination works by inhibiting the growth and reproduction of bacteria. Polymyxin B alters the bacterial cell membrane to increase permeability, while trimethoprim blocks the production of folic acid, which bacteria need to survive and multiply. It is essential to use this medication only for bacterial infections, as it will not work for viral or fungal eye issues. Patients should complete the full duration of the prescription as directed by their healthcare provider to prevent the infection from returning or the bacteria from becoming resistant to the treatment.
