About varenicline, Varenicline

What is this medication? Varenicline is a prescription medication primarily used to help adults quit smoking cigarettes. It belongs to a class of drugs known as smoking cessation aids and works by interfering with the nicotine receptors in the brain. By attaching to these receptors, the medication helps to decrease the urge to smoke and reduces the physical symptoms of withdrawal that many people experience when they stop using tobacco products. In addition to reducing cravings, varenicline blocks the reinforcing effects of nicotine. This means that if a person smokes a cigarette while taking the medication, they may find the experience less satisfying than before. Treatment usually lasts for twelve weeks, though a healthcare provider may recommend an additional course to increase the chances of remaining smoke-free over the long term. It is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive program that includes behavioral support.
