About VASOPRESSIN
What is this medication?
Vasopressin is a man-made version of a naturally occurring hormone in the body called antidiuretic hormone. It is primarily used to treat a condition known as diabetes insipidus, which is caused by a deficiency of this specific hormone. In this role, the medication helps the kidneys manage the amount of water in the body, which reduces excessive thirst and frequent urination. By helping the body retain the necessary amount of water, it maintains a proper balance of fluids and electrolytes.
This medication is also frequently used in emergency or intensive care settings to increase blood pressure in adults who are experiencing certain types of shock, such as vasodilatory shock. It works by causing the blood vessels to constrict or narrow, which helps raise blood pressure when it has dropped to dangerously low levels. Because it is a potent medication used for critical health conditions, it is typically administered by a healthcare professional through an injection or an intravenous infusion in a hospital environment.
