About Velphoro
What is this medication? Velphoro is a prescription medicine known as a phosphate binder. It is specifically used to control phosphorus levels in the blood for adults living with chronic kidney disease who are undergoing dialysis treatment. Because damaged kidneys are unable to effectively remove excess phosphorus from the body, levels can become dangerously high, which may lead to serious bone and heart issues over time. Velphoro helps manage this condition by targeting the phosphorus found in the foods you eat.
The medication works primarily within the digestive tract rather than being absorbed into the bloodstream. When taken during meals, the active ingredient binds to the phosphorus present in food, preventing it from entering the blood. This allows the phosphorus to pass through the digestive system and be eliminated as waste. By maintaining healthier phosphorus levels, the medication helps reduce the risk of long-term complications associated with mineral and bone disorders in patients on dialysis.
