About WELIREG

What is this medication?

Welireg is a prescription medication used to treat adults with von Hippel-Lindau disease who need treatment for renal cell carcinoma, central nervous system hemangioblastomas, or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. It is specifically intended for patients who do not require immediate surgery for these conditions. The drug belongs to a class of medications called HIF-2 alpha inhibitors, which work by blocking a protein that helps certain tumors grow and spread under low-oxygen conditions.

Additionally, Welireg is used for the treatment of adults with advanced renal cell carcinoma, which is the most common type of kidney cancer. This application is for patients whose cancer has continued to grow after receiving previous treatments, including an immunotherapy drug known as a PD-1 or PD-L1 inhibitor and a targeted therapy called a VEGF tyrosine kinase inhibitor. By interfering with specific proteins, the medication helps slow the progression of advanced kidney tumors.
