About Aflora

What is this medication? Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol is a prescription oral contraceptive pill used primarily to prevent pregnancy. It is categorized as a combined hormonal birth control medication because it contains two distinct female hormones: levonorgestrel, which is a progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, which is an estrogen. These hormones work together to stop the release of an egg from an ovary during the menstrual cycle. Additionally, the medication changes the cervical mucus and uterine lining to make it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Beyond its primary use as a contraceptive, healthcare providers may prescribe Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol to help regulate menstrual cycles or to decrease blood loss and painful cramps during periods. It is also sometimes utilized to treat moderate acne in women who are at least fifteen years old and have already started their menstrual periods. To ensure maximum effectiveness, this medication should be taken at the same time every day as directed by a doctor. It is important to note that while this medication prevents pregnancy, it does not provide protection against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.
