About BENZTROPINE MESYLATE
What is this medication? Benztropine mesylate is a prescription medication primarily used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. It belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics. In addition to treating Parkinson's, it is frequently prescribed to manage extrapyramidal side effects caused by certain antipsychotic medications. These side effects often include involuntary muscle movements, restlessness, and muscle stiffness.
The medication works by blocking a specific natural substance called acetylcholine in the body. By decreasing the effects of acetylcholine, benztropine helps restore the balance between chemical messengers in the brain, particularly in relation to dopamine. This process helps reduce muscle tremors, rigidity, and spasms, which allows patients to have better control over their physical movements and improves their daily functioning.
