About Xadago

What is this medication?

Xadago, also known by its generic name safinamide, is a prescription drug used as an add-on treatment for people with Parkinson’s disease. It is specifically intended for patients who are currently taking a combination of levodopa and carbidopa but are experiencing off episodes. These episodes occur when the effects of regular medications wear off, leading to a return of symptoms such as muscle stiffness, tremors, and slow movement.

This medication works as a selective monoamine oxidase type B inhibitor, which helps to increase and maintain the levels of dopamine in the brain. By preventing the breakdown of dopamine, Xadago assists in managing motor symptoms more effectively throughout the day. Its primary goal is to decrease the amount of off time a patient experiences, thereby increasing the duration of on time during which Parkinson’s symptoms are better controlled.
