About CIPROFLOXACIN HYDROCHLORIDE
What is this medication? Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride is a prescription antibiotic belonging to a group of medicines called fluoroquinolones. It is primarily used to treat various types of bacterial infections, including those of the urinary tract, lungs, skin, bones, and joints. Doctors may also prescribe it for serious conditions like chronic prostatitis, certain types of infectious diarrhea, or as a preventative measure after exposure to anthrax.
This medication works by interfering with the enzymes that bacteria need to repair and copy their DNA, which effectively stops the infection from spreading and kills the bacteria. Because it is an antibiotic, it is only effective against bacterial pathogens and will not work for viral infections such such as the common cold or influenza. Patients are advised to take the medication exactly as prescribed and to finish the entire course to prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
