About Cystagon
What is this medication?
Cystagon is a prescription medication primarily used to treat nephropathic cystinosis, which is a rare genetic disorder that affects both children and adults. This condition causes an accumulation of the amino acid cystine within various organs of the body, particularly the kidneys and eyes. By acting as a cystine-depleting agent, Cystagon helps to manage the levels of this amino acid, thereby preventing or slowing the progression of severe organ damage and potential kidney failure associated with the disease.
The medication works by reacting with the accumulated cystine to form a different substance that can more easily exit the cells. While Cystagon is effective at lowering internal cystine levels, it is important to understand that it does not cure the underlying genetic condition. Patients typically need to take this medication on a strict, lifelong schedule to maintain healthy levels and minimize the long-term systemic complications caused by cystinosis.
