About Dorzolamide Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution
What is this medication? Dorzolamide hydrochloride ophthalmic solution is a prescription eye drop primarily used to lower high pressure inside the eye. This condition, known as elevated intraocular pressure, is often seen in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. By reducing this internal pressure, the medication helps prevent potential damage to the optic nerve, which can otherwise lead to vision loss or blindness if left untreated.
The medication belongs to a class of drugs called carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. It works by interfering with an enzyme in the eye responsible for fluid production, thereby decreasing the amount of aqueous humor that is created. This reduction in fluid volume leads to a decrease in overall eye pressure. It is typically administered as one drop in the affected eye or eyes three times a day, though patients should always follow the specific dosing instructions provided by their healthcare provider.
