About Enspryng
What is this medication?
Enspryng is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, which is often referred to as NMOSD. This medication is specifically meant for patients who are anti-aquaporin-4 antibody positive. NMOSD is a rare and chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, primarily targeting the optic nerves and the spinal cord. This can result in inflammation that leads to vision loss, weakness, or even paralysis if the condition is not managed.
This drug works as an interleukin-6 receptor antagonist. It identifies and blocks a specific protein in the immune system that is responsible for triggering the inflammation seen in NMOSD attacks. By inhibiting this protein, the medication helps to decrease the frequency of relapses or flare-ups a patient might experience. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection and serves as a maintenance therapy to help patients manage their condition over the long term.
