About FAMOTIDINE

What is this medication?

Famotidine is a medication classified as an H2 blocker, which works by decreasing the total amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is frequently prescribed to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine. Patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, often use this medication to alleviate symptoms such as chronic heartburn and irritation of the esophagus.

Beyond managing reflux and ulcers, famotidine is utilized to treat pathological hypersecretory conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where the stomach produces excessive amounts of acid. It can also be used to help heal erosive esophagitis, which is damage to the food pipe caused by repeated exposure to stomach acid. This medication is available in various forms, including tablets and oral suspensions, and should be taken exactly as recommended by a medical professional.
