About Fluorescein

What is this medication?

Fluorescein is a diagnostic dye primarily used in the field of ophthalmology to help healthcare professionals examine the health and structure of the eye. When applied topically as eye drops or via a treated paper strip, the dye glows a bright yellowish-green color under cobalt blue light. This allows doctors to detect surface irregularities such as corneal abrasions, ulcers, or the presence of foreign objects. It is also frequently utilized to evaluate the fit of rigid gas permeable contact lenses and to assess the flow of tears across the surface of the eye.

In addition to its topical use, fluorescein can be administered intravenously for a procedure known as fluorescein angiography. During this test, the dye travels through the bloodstream and into the blood vessels of the retina and choroid at the back of the eye. Specialist cameras then capture images as the dye circulates, helping doctors identify issues like leaking vessels, blockages, or abnormal growths associated with conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. This diagnostic tool provides critical information that helps in planning appropriate treatments for various sight-threatening conditions.
