About Folvitra

What is this medication? Folic Acid is a prescription medication that primarily consists of folic acid, an essential B vitamin required for the body to produce and maintain healthy new cells. It is most commonly used to treat or prevent folic acid deficiency, which can result in certain types of anemia where the blood cannot carry enough oxygen. Doctors also frequently prescribe this supplement to women who are pregnant or planning to conceive, as adequate folic acid levels are crucial for the proper development of the baby's brain and spinal cord. In many clinical settings, Folic Acid is prescribed as a companion treatment for patients taking methotrexate to manage autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or severe psoriasis. Because methotrexate can interfere with how the body uses folate, it often leads to side effects like mouth ulcers, nausea, or liver enzyme abnormalities. By providing a supplemental source of folic acid, this medication helps reduce the frequency and severity of these side effects, allowing patients to better tolerate their primary treatment regimen.

Folic acid in doses above 0.1 mg daily may obscure pernicious anemia in that hematologic remission can occur while neurological manifestations progress.
