About Gentamicin Sulfate
What is this medication?
Gentamicin sulfate is a powerful aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections caused by specific types of gram-negative bacteria. This medication works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to produce essential proteins, which ultimately leads to their death and prevents the infection from spreading. It is commonly prescribed for severe conditions such as sepsis, respiratory tract infections, and complicated urinary tract infections when other less potent antibiotics may not be effective.
Beyond systemic use through injections, gentamicin sulfate is also available in topical and ophthalmic forms to treat localized issues. It is frequently used as an ointment or eye drop to clear up bacterial conjunctivitis and other ocular infections. Additionally, topical creams are used to treat minor skin infections like impetigo or infected wounds. Due to the risk of side effects like kidney damage or hearing loss with systemic use, doctors carefully monitor patients while they are receiving this medication.
