Helium Oxygen mixture

What is this medication? Helium oxygen mixture, commonly referred to as heliox, is a prescription medical gas used to treat patients experiencing significant respiratory distress. It is composed of a blend of oxygen and helium, where the helium replaces the nitrogen normally found in the air we breathe. Because helium has a lower density than nitrogen, the mixture creates less turbulence as it moves through the lungs. This allows the gas to flow more easily through narrowed or constricted airways, thereby reducing the physical effort a patient must exert to breathe and improving the delivery of oxygen to the bloodstream.

This medication is most frequently used in emergency departments and intensive care units to manage conditions like severe asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and upper airway obstructions such such as croup or post-extubation stridor. It is also beneficial for patients with airway tumors or those recovering from certain respiratory surgeries.
