About LEDERLE LEUCOVORIN
What is this medication? Lederle Leucovorin is a prescription medication that functions as a derivative of folic acid, specifically known as folinic acid. Its primary role in medical treatment is to act as a rescue agent following high-dose methotrexate chemotherapy. Because methotrexate works by blocking the body's use of folic acid to kill cancer cells, it can also severely damage healthy tissues. This medication provides a source of folate that bypasses the block, thereby protecting the bone marrow and other vital organs from the toxic side effects of the chemotherapy.
Beyond its use in methotrexate rescue therapy, this medication is frequently administered in combination with 5-fluorouracil to enhance the effectiveness of treatment for advanced colorectal cancer. It is also used to treat certain types of anemia, such as megaloblastic anemia resulting from a folic acid deficiency when oral supplementation is not feasible. Additionally, it may be prescribed to counteract the toxic effects of accidental overdoses of medications that act as folic acid antagonists.
