About Lidocaine Patch

What is this medication? Lidocaine patches are a type of topical medication primarily used to treat the localized nerve pain associated with post-herpetic neuralgia, which is a condition that can follow a shingles infection. This prescription medication belongs to a class of drugs called local anesthetics. By being applied directly to the skin, it works by blocking sodium channels in the nerve endings, which prevents pain signals from being sent to the brain. This provides a numbing effect specifically in the area where the patch is placed, offering relief for patients who experience sensitivity or burning sensations.

The patch is designed to be worn on clean, dry, and intact skin for a set period, usually not exceeding twelve hours in any twenty-four-hour period. It is essential to follow specific medical guidance regarding how many patches can be used at one time to avoid excessive absorption into the bloodstream. Because the patches still contain active medication after they are removed, they should be folded and disposed of carefully to keep them out of reach of children and pets. Using the patch on broken, blistered, or irritated skin should be avoided to prevent adverse reactions.
