About Lidocan
What is this medication? Lidocan is a prescription medication formulated as a topical patch containing lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic. It is specifically used to treat the chronic nerve pain that often persists after a shingles infection, a condition known as post-herpetic neuralgia. The patch is designed to be applied directly to the skin where the pain is most intense, providing localized relief for patients suffering from long-term discomfort. This medication works by blocking sodium channels in the nerve membranes, which temporarily prevents the nerves from sending pain signals to the brain. By numbing the specific area of the skin where it is applied, it helps alleviate sensations such as burning, stabbing, or extreme sensitivity. It is typically used on a controlled cycle, often worn for twelve hours and then removed for twelve hours, to provide effective symptom management while minimizing the risk of side effects.
