About Mefloquine Hydrochloride

What is this medication? Mefloquine hydrochloride is an antimalarial drug primarily used for the prevention and treatment of malaria. This serious disease is caused by parasites transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The medication is particularly useful for travelers visiting areas where malaria is prevalent, especially in regions where the parasites have developed resistance to other common treatments like chloroquine. For prevention, it is generally taken once a week according to a strict schedule that begins before departure and continues for several weeks after returning home.

In addition to its use as a preventive measure, this medication is prescribed to treat mild to moderate cases of active malaria. It functions by attacking the parasites as they live and multiply within the red blood cells of the host. While effective at clearing infections, it must be taken exactly as directed by a healthcare professional to ensure the parasites are fully eradicated. Due to its potential impact on the central nervous system, doctors typically review a patient's medical history carefully before prescribing it to ensure it is the safest option for their specific needs.
