About Primaquine Phosphate
What is this medication? Primaquine phosphate is an antimalarial drug primarily used to prevent the relapse of malaria caused by certain parasites, specifically Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale. These particular parasites can remain dormant in the liver even after a person has recovered from the initial illness, leading to future outbreaks. By targeting these dormant forms, the medication helps to completely clear the infection from the body. It is often prescribed as a follow-up treatment after an initial course of other antimalarial medications has been completed.
In some clinical situations, primaquine phosphate may also be used in combination with other medications to treat Pneumocystis pneumonia, a serious lung infection that typically affects individuals with weakened immune systems. Before starting this medication, patients are usually tested for a genetic condition called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, as the drug can cause serious blood disorders in people with this condition. It is important to take the full course of the medication exactly as directed by a healthcare provider to ensure the infection is fully eradicated.
