About Mupirocin
What is this medication?
Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic used to treat various types of skin infections caused by specific bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It is most commonly prescribed for conditions like impetigo, which is a highly contagious skin infection that primarily affects children, as well as infections involving the hair follicles. The medication is applied directly to the affected area of the skin to help clear the infection and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the body or to other people.
In addition to treating external skin sores, a specific nasal formulation of mupirocin is used to eliminate bacteria from the inside of the nose. This application is often used to eradicate MRSA, a type of staph bacteria that is resistant to many other antibiotics, particularly in healthcare settings to prevent the spread of infection. The drug works by blocking the ability of bacteria to produce the proteins they need to survive, effectively stopping the growth and multiplication of the bacterial cells.
