About Mycostatin

What is this medication?

Mycostatin is an antifungal medication that contains the active ingredient nystatin. It is primarily used to treat infections caused by various types of yeast, specifically Candida albicans. This medication works by binding to sterols in the fungal cell membrane, which disrupts the cell wall and causes the fungal cell contents to leak out, effectively killing the organism. It is most commonly prescribed for oral thrush, which is a yeast infection of the mouth and throat, but it can also be used for fungal infections in the digestive tract.

Depending on the area of the body being treated, Mycostatin is available in several forms including oral suspensions, tablets, and topical creams. For oral infections, the liquid is often held in the mouth or swished before swallowing to ensure direct contact with the affected tissues. Since the body does not absorb nystatin significantly through the skin or the lining of the digestive system, it is considered very effective for localized treatments while carrying a low risk of systemic side effects. Patients should complete the full course of the medication as directed by their healthcare provider to ensure the infection is completely cleared.
