It must be administered by trained medical personnel in a clinical setting to ensure patient safety, as breathing this mixture for extended periods without supervision could lead to oxygen deprivation. The primary use of this medication is in pulmonary function laboratories for specialized diagnostic procedures. It is frequently utilized in hypoxia challenge testing to evaluate how a patient might react to low-oxygen environments, such as those found at high altitudes or during commercial flights. Additionally, it can be used to study respiratory drive and to calibrate medical instruments used in the assessment of lung health.
