What is this medication?

Plegridy is a prescription medication, also known by its generic name peginterferon beta-1a, used to treat adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. This treatment is specifically indicated for individuals diagnosed with clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. It belongs to a class of drugs called interferons, which are proteins that occur naturally in the body to help regulate the immune system and reduce inflammation within the central nervous system.

The primary goal of using this medication is to decrease the frequency of clinical relapses and delay the progression of physical disability associated with multiple sclerosis. Because the medication is pegylated, it remains active in the body for a longer period than non-pegylated interferons, which allows for a less frequent dosing schedule of once every two weeks. It is commonly administered as an injection under the skin using a pre-filled pen designed for convenient self-administration.
