About SILVADENE
What is this medication? Silvadene is a prescription topical cream containing silver sulfadiazine, which belongs to a class of drugs known as sulfa antibiotics. It is primarily used to prevent and treat infections in patients with second-degree and third-degree burns. By acting as an antimicrobial agent, the cream helps to protect the wound site from dangerous bacteria and yeast that could hinder the healing process or lead to more serious systemic health issues.
The cream is typically applied directly to the burned skin or onto sterile dressings that are placed over the affected area. It works by stopping the growth of various microorganisms that can infect open wounds by disrupting their cell membranes and metabolic processes. Because it contains sulfonamides, patients with a known allergy to sulfa drugs should inform their healthcare provider before use. Treatment is generally continued until the burn has healed or the wound is prepared for a skin graft.
