About SSD
What is this medication? SSD, which stands for silver sulfadiazine, is a topical antimicrobial cream primarily prescribed to prevent and treat wound infections in patients with serious burns. It is most commonly used for second-degree and third-degree burns to keep the area clean and free of bacterial growth as the skin heals. By acting as a broad-spectrum antibiotic, it helps protect vulnerable tissue from various types of bacteria and yeast that could otherwise cause severe medical complications during the recovery process.
The medication is typically applied directly to the affected skin after the wound has been cleaned and any dead tissue has been removed. It works by releasing silver ions into the wound, which disrupt the cell membranes and metabolic processes of harmful microorganisms. This creates a protective barrier that significantly reduces the risk of sepsis, a potentially life-threatening infection that can occur when bacteria enter the bloodstream through damaged or compromised skin.
