About Stelara, STELARA
What is this medication? Stelara is a prescription biologic medication used to treat several chronic inflammatory conditions caused by an overactive immune system. It is primarily approved for adults and children six years and older with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy. Additionally, it is used to manage active psoriatic arthritis in adults, helping to reduce joint pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with the condition.
The medication is also frequently prescribed for adults with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, particularly when other treatments have failed to provide adequate relief. Stelara works by blocking two specific proteins in the body, interleukin-12 and interleukin-23, which are known to contribute to inflammation. By targeting these pathways, the drug helps to reduce symptoms and promote long-term remission in patients with these inflammatory disorders.
