About Sterile Cord Blood Collection Unit (MSC127D)

What is this medication?

The Sterile Cord Blood Collection Unit (MSC127D) is a specialized medical device used by healthcare professionals to collect blood from the umbilical cord and placenta immediately after the birth of a baby. This process occurs after the cord has been clamped and severed, ensuring it does not interfere with the routine care of the mother or the newborn. The unit is designed to provide a sterile, closed system for gathering this blood so that it can be safely transported to a laboratory or storage facility.

The primary purpose of using this collection kit is to preserve the rich supply of hematopoietic stem cells found within the umbilical cord blood. These stem cells are valuable because they can be used in medical treatments and transplants for patients with various blood-related disorders, immune system deficiencies, or certain types of cancer. The collection bag within the unit typically contains an anticoagulant solution, such as citrate phosphate dextrose, which prevents the blood from clotting while it is being moved and processed for long-term cryogenic storage.
