About Timoptic
What is this medication? Timoptic is a prescription eye drop medication that contains the active ingredient timolol maleate. It belongs to a class of drugs known as beta-blockers and is primarily used to lower internal eye pressure in patients who have been diagnosed with conditions such as open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. By effectively managing this pressure, the medication helps to prevent potential damage to the optic nerve and assists in preserving the patient's vision over time.
The medication works by reducing the production of aqueous humor, which is the clear fluid found inside the front part of the eye. When there is a balance between the production and drainage of this fluid, eye pressure remains within a healthy range. Timoptic is typically applied directly into the eye once or twice daily as directed by a healthcare professional. It is important for patients to follow their prescribed dosing schedule and discuss any potential side effects or existing medical conditions with their doctor before starting treatment.
