About TOBRAMYCIN
What is this medication? Tobramycin is a prescription aminoglycoside antibiotic used to eliminate bacteria that cause various types of infections. It works by binding to specific parts of the bacteria to prevent them from synthesizing essential proteins, which leads to the death of the bacterial cells. The medication is versatile and can be administered as an eye drop or ointment for ocular infections, as an inhaled solution for respiratory issues, or through an injection for more severe systemic conditions.
A significant use for the inhaled version of this medication is the treatment of chronic lung infections in patients with cystic fibrosis, specifically targeting the bacteria known as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The ophthalmic versions are commonly used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis and other surface-level eye infections. Like all antibiotics, tobramycin is only effective against bacteria and will not provide relief for viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.
