About TOBREX
What is this medication? Tobrex is a prescription antibiotic medication used to treat external bacterial infections of the eye and the surrounding structures. It contains the active ingredient tobramycin, which belongs to a class of drugs known as aminoglycoside antibiotics. This medication works by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause infections such as conjunctivitis or inflammation of the eyelids. It is specifically designed for topical application directly to the eye surface and is not effective against viral or fungal eye infections.
Doctors typically prescribe Tobrex in the form of ophthalmic drops or ointment. Patients are usually instructed to apply the medication several times a day depending on the severity of the infection and the specific formulation used. Common side effects may include temporary eye redness, itching, or swelling of the eyelid. It is important to complete the full course of treatment as directed by a healthcare provider to ensure the infection is completely cleared and to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
