About Triumeq, Triumeq PD

What is this medication? Triumeq and Triumeq PD are prescription medications used to treat human immunodeficiency virus type 1, which is commonly known as HIV-1. This medication combines three different antiretroviral drugs into a single tablet: dolutegravir, abacavir, and lamivudine. It works by interfering with the enzymes the virus needs to replicate, thereby lowering the viral load in the blood. By keeping the virus at low levels, the medication helps the immune system stay stronger and reduces the likelihood of developing infections or other health issues associated with the virus.

Triumeq is generally used for adults and children who weigh at least twenty-five kilograms, while Triumeq PD is a smaller, dispersible tablet version specifically created for pediatric patients weighing at least six kilograms. It is important to note that this medication is intended as a complete stand-alone treatment and should not be taken with other HIV drugs. Before a patient begins this treatment, they must undergo a blood test for a specific genetic marker called HLA-B 5701 to prevent a potentially serious allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in the formula.
