About Tropicamide
What is this medication?
Tropicamide is an ophthalmic medication used primarily to dilate the pupil, a process known as mydriasis. It belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergics. By blocking certain receptors in the eye muscles, it allows the pupil to open wide and prevents it from responding to light. This effect is essential for eye doctors to clearly examine the internal structures of the eye, such as the retina, optic nerve, and lens during a comprehensive eye examination.
In addition to dilating the pupil, this medication is used to temporarily paralyze the eye muscles that control focusing, which is a state called cycloplegia. This is particularly helpful when an eye care professional needs to determine an accurate refractive error for glasses or during certain types of eye surgery. The effects of the drops generally begin within twenty to forty minutes and may last for several hours. Patients are usually advised to wear sunglasses and avoid tasks requiring clear vision, like driving, until their pupils return to their normal size.
