About Verzenio
What is this medication?
Verzenio, known generically as abemaciclib, is a prescription medication categorized as a kinase inhibitor. It works by blocking specific proteins called cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6, which are involved in the growth and division of cancer cells. By inhibiting these proteins, the drug helps slow or stop the progression of hormone receptor-positive (HR+) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) breast cancer.
This medication is typically prescribed for adults with advanced or metastatic breast cancer, either as a stand-alone therapy or in combination with endocrine treatments like aromatase inhibitors or fulvestrant. It is also used in certain patients with early-stage breast cancer who have a high risk of the disease returning after surgery. Healthcare providers determine the appropriate dosage and treatment plan based on the specific stage of the cancer and the patient's overall health status.
