About Zinc Chloride

What is this medication?

Zinc chloride is a prescription medication used primarily as an additive to intravenous fluids, specifically for patients receiving total parenteral nutrition. It serves as a source of the essential trace element zinc for individuals who are unable to consume food or nutrients by mouth. By adding this mineral to nutritional solutions, healthcare providers can help maintain normal zinc levels in the blood and prevent the various health complications associated with a clinical deficiency.

In the body, zinc plays a critical role in numerous metabolic processes, including protein synthesis, wound healing, and proper immune system function. It is also necessary for normal growth rates and the repair of damaged tissues. When patients receive long-term intravenous feeding without adequate zinc supplementation, they may experience symptoms such as skin rashes, impaired wound healing, and increased susceptibility to infections. Zinc chloride helps ensure these vital biological functions continue by replacing the minerals that would normally be obtained through a standard diet.
