About Zyprexa, ZYPREXA Zydis, ZYPREXA Intramuscular
What is this medication?
Zyprexa, which contains the active ingredient olanzapine, is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat several mental and mood disorders. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged thirteen and older. Furthermore, it is used to manage acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder, either as a standalone treatment or in combination with other medications like lithium or valproate. By affecting certain natural chemicals in the brain, it helps to stabilize mood and reduce symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, or disorganized thinking.
This medication is provided in different delivery methods including standard oral tablets, ZYPREXA Zydis orally disintegrating tablets, and ZYPREXA Intramuscular injection. The Zydis formulation is designed to dissolve quickly on the tongue, which can be helpful for patients who have difficulty swallowing pills or to ensure the medication is taken. The intramuscular injection is generally used in clinical settings to treat acute agitation related to schizophrenia or bipolar mania when rapid control of symptoms is necessary. For certain patients, this medication is also used alongside fluoxetine to treat episodes of depression associated with bipolar disorder or depression that has not responded to other treatments.
